The holiday season is the perfect time to dive into the wonderful world of magnums. Magnum bottles, 1.5L or the equivalence to two traditional sized bottles, are an excellent choice for festive, group gatherings.
While most large formats take their names from biblical figures, following the tradition established in Champagne with the jeroboam, the “magnum” is simply translated from Latin for “big”. Its first usage in the English language was in 1788 and was in relation to the wine bottle. Like the jeroboam, the magnum also first emerged in Champagne, where the quality of the bottle was of particular importance in order to avoid explosion caused by the pressure from the bubbles inside.
1. Magnums are Made for Entertaining
Not only do magnums evoke celebration, the spirit of generosity, and bring the wow factor, but they are also quite practical for entertaining. Each robust magnum serves about 10 glasses, ensuring everyone at the holiday table can enjoy the same wine. Ask yourself, why open two bottles of wine, when you can open one – and do it in such dramatic flair as a magnum?
2. Magnums are Perfect for Aging
Nothing makes an impact quite like showing up to a party with a magnum of fine wine, but there are other unexpected benefits to them as well. The magnum has a genuine role to play in the long-term preservation of wine. Since corks are porous, they allow a small amount of oxygen to slowly pass through them into the wine bottle, enabling the wine to age and develop its flavor over time. Therefore, magnum bottles expose double the amount of wine to roughly the same amount of oxygen, lengthening the aging process and keeping wines fresher for longer.
3. Magnums Make a Big Impression
Magnums are a statement piece in and of themselves. They are impressive, intriguing, and deliver just enough pretense to make you feel like the ultimate holiday hero when you uncork a bottle at your next soirée.
